The Most Mesmerizing National Parks In The Caribbean, According To Tripadvisor
Travelers adore the Caribbean for its unspoiled beaches and slow-paced lifestyle. What's not to love about lounging in the sun, drink in hand, with the echoing sound of waves crashing? That said, visitors to the Caribbean typically stay at a resort that provides them with everything they want or need for a vacation. Think meals, activities, and even access to stunning private beaches. However, those who wish to venture beyond their resort limits should consider exploring a national park.
The Caribbean is made up of 700 islands, which are home to several national parks. Regardless of their destination, visitors will find that a national park is never too far from them. With majestic scenery and views, a national park will undoubtedly enhance your overall experience. You will see the bountiful flora and fauna that call the islands home. In some cases, you'll also receive a history lesson.
If you're ready to explore outside the resort, we searched travel sites like Tripadvisor, Thrillist, and more to find some of the most unique and beloved national parks throughout the Caribbean. Grab your hiking boots and be prepared for an adventure off the beaten path.
Pigeon Island National Park
Located in St. Lucia, Pigeon Island National Park is top-rated on Tripadvisor as one of the best national parks in the Caribbean. In fact, the destination received a Traveler's Choice Award in 2023. Pigeon Island National Park has an illustrious history that involves piracy and disputes between the British and French. The 44-acre island, deemed a national park in 1979, is ripe for exploration. Visitors will find military ruins, including Fort Rodney. Reviewers on Tripadvisor note that you have to hike to reach Fort Rodney but that it's well worth the spectacular coastal views.
Additionally, there are two pristine beaches where visitors can swim and enjoy the park's serene beauty. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available to rent for a small fee. Pigeon Island National Park is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the time of this publication, admission for children is $3 and $10 for adults. Note that the prices are subject to change. If you work up an appetite during your visit, Jambe De Bois serves Caribbean cuisine and offers ocean views. Although Pigeon Island National Park is an island, a causeway allows visitors to reach it by car or bus.
The 3 Eyes National Park
In the Dominican Republic, you'll find Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos, or 3 Eyes National Park in English. It's only about 20 minutes from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The 3 Eyes National Park is listed on Tripadvisor as the best national park in the Caribbean, perhaps with good reason. It's home to several jaw-dropping caves and gorgeous lagoons (seen in the TikTok above). However, there is a caveat: Swimming is prohibited. Nevertheless, visitors will still be taken away by the otherworld beauty of the 3 Eyes National Park. Keep in mind that there are stairs at this location.
One Tripadvisor reviewer wrote in February 2024, "The colors of the water and the caverns are absolutely amazing. There are three to see walking and the fourth is reached from the third via a 100 yard boat ride for 50 pesos, which I would definitely recommend. It takes about an hour taking time for pictures along the way. A lot of up and down via steps so wear the right shoes. Great way to spend an hour or so."
Others said there was plenty of wildlife to see, including fish and turtles. The 3 Eyes National Park is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is a self-guided experience, but Tripadvisor reviewers say that if you prefer, you can hire a tour guide on-site.
Arikok National Park
Aruba is a Caribbean destination ideal for a stress-free vacation. Visitors can't leave the island without exploring Arikok National Park. Located in Santa Cruz, it makes up 20% of Aruba and includes an array of awe-inspiring geological formations, including volcanic hills and caves. Visitors can also swim at Conchi, a natural pool (pictured) with alluring aquamarine waters among jagged rocks. Likewise, Arikok National Park is home to Dos Playas Beach, which features white sand and heart-stopping views. However, be warned that the beach is dangerous for swimming.
Needless to say, this national park is a hidden gem for outdoor adventures. Arikok National Park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. At the time of this publication, admission, which can be purchased at the visitor center, is $20 for adults (children 17 and under can enter for free). Arikok National Park and a majority of reviewers on Tripadvisor recommend traversing the park with a vehicle (roads are available).
You can rent a jeep at a local rental agency like RealDeal Car Rental or book a jeep tour. Ez Raider Aruba Tours offers a four-hour excursion to Arikok National Park, including stops at Conchi and Dos Playas Beach. Prices start at $89.
Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park
Visitors to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park in St. Kitts get a two-for-one deal: a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also ranked third on Tripadvisor as one of the best national parks in the Caribbean. That said, the fortress was built for the British beginning in the late 1600s by enslaved Africans. Impressively, it stands 800 feet above sea level. Although the British stopped using the fortress in the mid-1800s, visitors can now explore the ruins and structures. Ultimately, this is a significant cultural experience.
One visitor on Tripadvisor wrote, "The fort was amazing, well preserved. An informative video starts your tour. There are many displays and historical information throughout the site. Excellent gift shop with friendly staff. Great views and pictures from the top." Another reviewer stated, "A very well preserved fort, that gives you a strong sense of the history & connection to the island's past. The views are absolutely breathtaking, certainly worth it purely for the panoramic views across the mountains & ocean." Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children.
Virgin Islands National Park
Virgin Islands National Park in St. John has been raved about by publications like Outside Magazine and Travel + Leisure. The Virgin Islands are actually a territory of the United States, and, in 2022, Virgin Islands National Park was named (via CNN) one of the least visited national parks in the country. However, don't be fooled by the lack of visitors. The Virgin Islands National Park has plenty to offer. This is the place to go to avoid crowds and admire wildlife including bats, fishes, donkeys, and much more.
In addition, there are several beaches including Cinnamon Bay Beach (pictured). Known for its blue waters and lush scenery, it's ideal for snorkeling. You can also camp in an eco-tent on Cinnamon Bay Beach. A reservation can be made online. Moreover, visitors can explore the ruins of the Annaberg Plantation, which once produced sugar and housed enslaved individuals. Hiking trails and guided hikes are available and can be booked online. The Virgin Islands National Park is open year-round. There is no admission fee.
