What Is Tierra Del Fuego Known For?

FISHING

Dry-fly fishing in rivers for sea-run brown trout (some up to 25 pounds) is Tierra del Fuego's claim in the anglers' world. The largest river, the aptly named Rio Grande, is the best known, and is fished in both the Chilean and Argentine sections. English fishermen introduced the browns (and rainbow and brook trout) in the 1930s, and today the Rio Grande is generally considered the best sea trout fishery in the world. Fishing season runs through the down under summer, from mid-October to mid-April.

NATURE

Located about 6 miles from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego National Park is laced with a network of trails that offer views of the Beagle Channel, as well as a series of beech forests, lakes, and rivers. One path, which follows the Beagle channel shoreline, passes by numerous Indian shell middens, now covered with vegetation.

ENTERTAINMENT

Well, this is not exactly Aspen or Chamonix...Yes, you can downhill ski here (usually July to October), but the handful of resorts generally have only a single lift. Intrepid snowboarders can hike farther up into more exciting runs, but the country-country contingent will probably have the most fun, with a vast, mostly flat back-country to explore.
